While it is extremely difficult for me to narrow down to saying one thing is my absolute favorite in the whole wide world, there is a long list of things I really like. Here is just one of the items on my list. I like to call these my Brown Paper Packages!
I’m a reader, a book lover! So naturally I want Roxie Kyle to love to read as well.
When she arrived home I didn’t waste any time reading to her. However, those first few times did not go as I had imagined. In my mind, she would snuggle up in my lap and lie their fully attentive to each word that I read, wanting more when the book was finished. Her initial disinterest in the written word did not deter me. I persevered by introducing her to a different type of book each day until finally, finally I found a winner. Thank you Karen Katz!
I think what drew her in was that each page had a flap that she could raise to discover what was underneath. So every morning at breakfast we read the same book over and over and over.
In an effort to change things up a bit for both mama and Roxie, I began the search for more books by this wonderful Karen Katz. Lo and behold, I found several at TJ Maxx and then a whole box of them at Sam’s. And they were all a hit!
We read several times throughout the day and the majority of what we read are by Karen Katz. I still expose her to other authors and styles of writing. And there are other books that in time she has taken an interest in (see list below). If there were a favorite though, as crazy as it may sound that a one year has a favorite, Karen Katz is it!
fun facts/reasons we like Katz books
- Katz has adopted a daughter who has inspired much of her writing
- Additional (free) resources on her website
- Bright illustrations
- Themed books (for example Baby Loves Summer, Happy Birthday Baby)
other books that Roxie brings to me to read
(I put a star by mama’s favorites)

“Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens;
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings;
These are a few of my favorite things.”
When in college my roommate would often ask the question, “What’s your favorite color, what’s your favorite food, what’s your favorite city, what’s your favorite pair of shoes?”
And I would always answer with a frustrated, “I don’t have favorites!!!!”
She confidently knew what her favorite day of the week was or what country singer she thought was #1. I on the other hand, being the extremely indecisive person I am, would just get flustered with the question because I truly had absolutely no idea what was my favorite. There are so many colors I like and there are not many foods I don’t like. So at that point in my life I conceded that I just don’t have favorites.
But now that I think about it that’s not entirely true. While it is extremely difficult for me to narrow down to saying one thing is my absolute favorite thing in the whole wide world, there is a long list of things I really like. Here are some of my favorite things (notice things is plural, I’m not committing to a favorite thingJ). I like to call these my Brown Paper Packages!

It’s been awhile since I added something to my love list but this is worth taking the time to love. Roxie Kyle is teething. The messy, wet kind of “I put everything within my sight in my mouth” kind of teething. So . . . when I came across these necklaces I had to give them a try.
Mindy Mae’s Market offers a super cute necklace for mama to wear and baby to chew. And it’s safe for your little one’s mouth. Plus, if Roxie’s not in my lap or arms I can just slip the necklace around her neck.
There are a variety of colors and bead shapes to choose from. The $21.99 price isn’t too bad either (especially considering what I’ve spent in $2 and $3 teething toys). For a lower price of $9.99 they also offer a teething bracelet (it doesn’t have as many options on bead choices).
Just a side note, Mindy Mae’s Market has lots of other cute things, so make sure to browse through their site.
I’ve been wanting some of these cute ceramic berry baskets for some time but just haven’t broken down and purchased them. They’re perfect as a table decoration or using them practically to store fruit for quick and easy access in the refrigerator. Anthropologie has them in all cute colors but they were $14 a basket, and they’re not very big. Plus shipping and handling so I just couldn’t convince myself. This week Brooke sent me an email with a picture of the same ones I had seen from Anthropologie. Remembering again how cute they were and how I would love to have them I started googling and found them on sale from Sur la Table for $5.56. WHAT A DEAL! They had white and turquoise in stock. I was sold and purchased them on the spot. Probably not something I needed but I will definitely put them to use and they’re so cute!
By the way, if you order them, don’t be surprised by the enormous box they come in. I only ordered three and they came in a huge box wrapped up as if they were the most fragile, precious item ever. At least they came in one piece. (Forgive the blurry pictures. I took them on my phone.)
